Also through this internship I figured out that I will work to find a job that is not an office job. Throughout this internship I have realized that I would not be able to be in this type of working environment for very long. The people and relationships here are great but the work they are doing is not something that interests me, I feel like I am more of a hands on work type person. Because I basically come in and work in my little cubical every single day, I decided that for my photo essay, I'll add pictures of the tasks I do and the people I've worked with.
I don’t know if I would say that I’m always doing something because there seems to be a good amount of free-time but when I am given a task I finish it in a very timely manor. Tip 2: Don't go to a meeting without a notebook Whenever in meetings or shadowing, I take notes on what might be important or just what I’m hearing. Tip 3: Get to know all your colleagues EARLY Because I have been all over the office and working with a bunch of people, I have gotten the opportunity to get to know a good amount of the workers. Even the ones I don’t know are very friendly and open to helping me, or using my help. Tip 4: Show up on time (or early) for everything I have shown up on time everyday, usually coming in a little early. My mentor is very lenient with my come and go time but it’s still polite to come in on time. Tip 5: Dress more professionally than you think you need to The dress code here is very relaxed, the workers wear things you would wear just walking around your own home but I continue to dress as I would for school. The original idea for my project was to go around all the different sections that make up the insurance company, and learn what they do everyday, and help them out with what they do. The final project would be a collections of all the work I have done.
After have been working here for a week and realizing there is not much I can do to help because I’m not properly trained, the plan is to switch sectors in the company. Along with insurance, they also own the San Diego Sockers. From now on I believe I will be working within that portion of the company. A lot of marketing has to be done for the soccer team so I will be working with my mentor to create ways to market for the team. So far throughout internship I’ve been exploring different parts of the company. I’ve now gathered that it is all extremely difficult to understand and all the people working here really know what they’re doing. Everyone seems to be very hard working and for the most part, pretty focused. The best part for me to see so far is watching everyone bond with each other. The atmosphere in this workplace is very positive and everyone seems to get along and each individual adds something different. While being around the office I have heard a couple of pretty funny things, I also just really enjoy talking to the workers. They have been nothing but friendly and open to helping me understand. Something shocking that I have noticed is that you don’t necessarily need to have gone to college to work here. Everyone says that insurance isn’t something that you can learn in college, but is something you learn just by doing. It’s cool to see young girls working to support themselves at such a young age, but that isn’t the path I would choose for myself.
